On Saturday, June 28, 2014, Canadian high school volunteers brought their community together for an annual Mukti Walk-a-thon event in Mississauga, Canada. In the same year, an American couple moved to India for Mukti and we were able to take a closer look at online K-12 education platform.
In 2015, Jennifer LeBeau (Mukti Village USA board member) went to India with Marsha and helped set up a first Mukti computer laptop. In the picture, we have two young girls sitting at the Mukti Computer Lab and trying their hands on English alphabets, learning to read, “it’s fun to read” and “I’m reading.”
By 2015, Mukti was supporting education of children from Sonagachi, one of the largest red-light district in India. Tragically, children under 18 make up 35% of workers in the sex industry. Recent reports estimate that this number is increasing by nearly ten percent each year. While 80% are forced into prostitution against their will, many are born into the trade and see no other option that to follow their mothers into the brothels. The children cannot afford their only hope for freedom – education.
In February 2016, Jennifer traveled to the head office of Trihydro in USA and received a donation of 12 laptops.
In the picture, (from left to right) Brian Askins (IT Trihydro), Jack Bedessom (President/CEO, Trihydro), Jennifer (Mukti board member) and Laurie Roylance (IT Trihydro) met on 19 February 2016 and Mukti received these laptops that will be shipped to the school in Dehra Dun, India.
Throughout 2016, we will be connecting with North American University students as we get ready to volunteer on the field in India. Starting the summer of 2017, we will be organizing educational camps for children in India. Mukti volunteers will be working one-on-one with poor and at-risks boys and girls, teaching them to work with computers, speak English, and practice online Math and English tutorials. Experience with photography, videography, graphics design, and writing skills is a plus.
The 2017 India camp will also provide health checkups, assessments, and interventions for each child. Volunteer to educate, empower and free. For more information or to reserve your spot, e-mail us at muktivillage@gmail.com
